Renault is saying goodbye to the world-renowned Renault Sport branding that it has been using on its performance cars, replacing it with Alpine Cars.

Speed freaks will be weeping into their burnt rubber today with the news that French motor manufacturer Renault is shuttering its iconic ‘Sport’ brand.

Launched in 1976, Renault Sport, and its sought-after RS badging has been recognised as one of Europe’s closest motorsport driving experiences in a consumer model. Ironically, the Sport brand was created as the company’s Alpine competition department was closed down, and now things have moved full circle as the French company want to elevate the Alpine Cars name in place of the Sport marque. Renault changed their F1 team name to Alpine F1 earlier this year in a hint at the changes to come, and in January of this year it was announced that Renault Sport operations would be merged into an Alpine-led business unit.

“As part of the reorganisation of the Renault Group by brand, it is essential that the various entities that make up the business unit bear the Alpine name and embody the values and ambitions of the brand,” said Alpine CEO, Laurent Rossi.

“Alpine aims to be a premium sports brand at the forefront of innovation and technology. Alpine Cars with its expertise and experience in sports vehicles is a master card in achieving our goals.”

It is expected that as part of Renault Sport moving to Alpine Cars, the firm’s workforce will elend their expertise to the upcoming range of electric Alpines.

Robert Bonetto, product performance and engineering director at Alpine, added: “By becoming Alpine Cars, the teams are embarking on a new dynamic, rich in projects carried out with the support of the Alpine Racing teams and all of Renault Group’s businesses. This is an extremely exciting time for our engineers.”
